What drives Umrah prices from Morocco, and room types

Each figure comes from a different year, speaker and package. Read together, they show which lines move a price. They do not add up to a price list, and we do not combine them into one.

What goes into an Umrah price?

A package sold in Morocco bundles several things you could, in principle, pay for separately: the return flight to Saudi Arabia, nights in a hotel in Makkah and usually in Madinah, transfers between airports, hotels and cities, the travel formalities handled by the agency, often some meals, sometimes a group guide, and the agency's own margin on top.

Two quotes at different prices rarely differ on one line only. The usual culprits are the same every season:

  • the flight: direct or with a stopover, which airline, which departure city, which dates;
  • the hotel: its distance from the mosque, its standard, and the number of nights in each city;
  • the room: how many people share it;
  • the season: Ramadan and its last nights, or a quieter month;
  • the agency: its margin and what it includes or leaves out.

The price depends on the hotel's distance from al-Haram mosque and on the length of stay, according to an agency-association head quoted by Le360 (March 2024)1. The sections below take each line in turn, with the figures that have been published for it.

Flights: why are they the biggest moving line?

In an economy Ramadan Umrah estimated at about 25,000 dirhams, the return ticket accounted for about 14,000 dirhams on average, according to an agency-association head quoted by Le360 (March 2024)1. In that example, the flight weighs more than everything else in the package put together.

The flight also explains much of the rise since the pandemic. The cheapest Umrah package went from 18,000 to 24,000 dirhams, mainly because of higher airfares, according to the federation's president, quoted by Le Matin (2022)5. A year later, Challenge reported a rise of more than 30% in the cost of Umrah, linked to air capacity and accommodation, according to Challenge (2023)3.

Seats are scarcest in Ramadan. In early March 2025, a direct Casablanca-Jeddah flight for the Ramadan Umrah was still hard to find, with almost every airline full on direct Morocco-Saudi flights in February, according to LesEco4.

At the top of the market, the cabin changes the sum entirely: a business-class return ticket was put at 35,000 dirhams, in luxury offers that could exceed 60,000 dirhams, according to an agency-association head quoted by Le360 (March 2024)1.

What to check on a quote: direct or with a stopover, the airline, the departure city, the exact dates, and whether the baggage allowance suits an older traveller who may need more medication or a wheelchair.

Hotel and room basis: what does "quad" mean in a headline price?

The hotel line has two parts that move the price: where the hotel is, and how many people share the room.

Distance comes first: it is one of the two things the regional association head quoted by Le360 named when explaining why prices differ. No source in our register publishes a price per metre or per hotel category, so we give no figure for it.

The room basis is the shortest phrase on a quote and one of the heaviest. A "quad" or "quadruple" room means four travellers sleep in the same hotel room. Because the room is split four ways while the flight costs each traveller the same, it is normally the basis behind the lowest headline price.

The one published price in our register that names its room basis is a quad: from 16,500 dirhams for the second half of Rajab, according to agencies quoted by Hespress (December 2024)2. The same article noted that these prices were disputed among professionals, according to agencies quoted by Hespress (December 2024)2. A headline price is the bottom of the ladder, for the most crowded room at one point in the year, not an average.

Room types in an Umrah quote

Term on the quote Who sleeps in the room What to ask before paying
Quad (quadruple) four travellers if you are fewer than four, who fills the other beds
Triple three travellers whether the third bed is a real bed or a fold-out
Double two travellers one large bed or two separate beds
Single one traveller the supplement in dirhams, and for which nights
Shared place one bed sold on its own, in a room the agency fills with other pilgrims how occupants are grouped, and what happens if the room is not filled
Family room only the people booked together the price per person and the total for the household
Extra bed one bed added to a room planned for fewer people its size, and whether it suits an older person
Supplement the amount added when you choose a less shared room per person or per room, per night or for the stay

Two points catch families out. The room basis can change between cities: a quad in Makkah and a triple in Madinah on the same trip. And "double" says nothing about the beds: for a son travelling with his mother, two separate beds matter. Ask for the basis to be written for each hotel.

For any religious question about how relatives share a room during Umrah, ask an imam or a scholar you trust; a price site is not the place to answer it.

Season: how much do Ramadan and the quieter months change the price?

The season sets the general level of every other line. An Umrah outside Ramadan can cost up to 50% less, according to an agency-association head quoted by Le360 (March 2024)1. That is one professional's ceiling, not a measured average.

Within Ramadan, the end of the month costs most: prices climb above all during the last 10 days, according to an agency-association head quoted by Le360 (March 2024)1.

The months before Ramadan sit in between. At the end of 2024, packages were offered from 15,500 dirhams for 2 weeks in Shaban, while packages covering part of Ramadan started at 18,000 dirhams and generally exceeded 20,000 dirhams, according to agencies quoted by Hespress (December 2024)2.

The Ramadan figures, season by season, are on the Ramadan Umrah price page.

The agency margin: how much of the price is it?

Challenge put agencies' margins at 10 to 25% of the package price, according to Challenge (2023)3.

Two cautions about that range. It is a margin, not a profit: it is what is left between the selling price and what the agency pays airlines, hotels and transport companies, and the agency's staff, offices, group supervision and unsold places are paid out of it. And it is a single published estimate from one season, without a stated method; we have no way to check it against agencies' accounts.

For a family, the margin is the line you can see least. What you can see is what the agency includes for it: who accompanies the group, what happens if a flight is changed, whether transfers and some meals are included. Two quotes with the same total can buy very different trips.

Premium packages: why can they cost several times more?

For the Ramadan 2025 Umrah, premium and VIP packages cost 2 to 3 times more per person than packages starting at about 25,000 dirhams, according to LesEco (March 2025)4.

The multiplier comes from the same lines as above, pushed to their top: hotels closest to the mosque, rooms shared by fewer people or by none, sometimes a business-class flight. Wiki Tours, which publishes this observatory, explains how it defines its own package levels in Wiki Tours' own guide to its Umrah tiers, from economy to VIP; its prices never enter our figures.

How do you compare two quotes on the same basis?

Step by step

  1. Write down the room basis for each hotel, and whether the price is per person.
  2. Count the nights in Makkah and in Madinah separately.
  3. Note the hotel names and the stated distance from the mosque.
  4. Check the flight: direct or not, the airline and the departure city.
  5. List what each quote includes and leaves out: transfers, meals, guide.
  6. Only then compare the totals.

To do the arithmetic, a browser tool on our sister site sets several packages side by side and works out the price per night per person, without saving anything. The figures published for the rest of the year are on how much Umrah costs from Morocco, and the rules behind every figure on this site are in our data and method page.

What the figures do not tell us yet

  • No source in our register publishes the price gap between a double, a triple and a quad room for the same trip. We do not estimate it.
  • The weight of hotel distance in a price has not been published in figures.
  • The agency margin rests on a single published estimate, without a stated method.
  • Most published prices do not state their room basis or their number of nights.
  • Our own survey of agency offers, with room basis as a column, does not exist yet.

Questions about these amounts

What does quad mean in an Umrah package?

It means four travellers share one hotel room. It is usually the basis behind the lowest headline price, because the room cost is split four ways while the flight costs each traveller the same. If you are not travelling as four, ask who the other occupants will be.

Is a price per person or per room?

Umrah packages are normally quoted per person, but a price that does not say so in writing does not tell you. Ask for the room basis and the words per person next to each other on the quote, and for the total for your household in dirhams.

Is the agency margin the agency's profit?

No. The margin was put at 10 to 25% of the package price, according to Challenge (2023)3. It is the difference between the selling price and what the agency pays its suppliers, and the agency's own costs are paid out of it.
